Expansion side San Dieguito are holding their own
San Diego FC will test Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on Thursday when two of the top teams in the USA MLS 2025 meet in an attempt to gain the edge in the playoff race. The Whitecaps, in second place with 35 points from 17 matches, have been the more consistent of the pair while San Diego FC are a breath-taking third with 33 points from 18 games.
Mikey Varas, who took over as head coach of the expansion side in September 2024, has introduced an ultra-attacking, high-tempo pressing style to the club that has seen them punch above their weight in their debut MLS season.
San Diego’s attack is led by Denmark’s Anders Dreyer, who has scored eight MLS goals from 18 appearances.
Vancouver have the experience and talent to take it
But, as good as San Diego FC have been, it is hard to see them beating a very good Whitecaps team that are coming into this game at 1.50 odds. Jesper Soerensen has been methodical in his approach since taking over in January and has instilled a structured, possession-based game on his players at home.
They have played their best soccer when they have been able to dictate the pace of the game and control the midfield battles while their attack is capable of blowing teams away with 19 goals scored in their nine home games.
They are unbeaten in two home games, winning 3-0 against Seattle in their last game at BC Place. San Diego FC are in better form, however, with three wins, one draw and only one defeat in their five previous MLS games.
Whitecaps can dominate San Dee’s away record
Their away form is mixed, however, with four wins and four defeats from eight away trips. They lost 1-0 at Seattle in their first away trip before turning the tables on the same opponents with a 4-0 win.
Momentum is with San Diego FC but the Whitecaps home form is just so strong and they have the quality, in the likes of Brian White who has bagged ten MLS goals from 12 games this season, to cause the visitors problems. We’ll take Soerensen’s men to edge this one, but the odds on goals could be better than the moneyline on this game.
San Diego FC have played an entertaining brand of soccer this season, so we will take ‘over 2.5 goals’ as an alternative bet. A clash of styles like this could lead to some open play and plenty of goalmouth action if Vancouver cannot control the tempo.
